History of Grama Panchayat

Located almost in the central part of Ernakulam District, in Kunnathunad Taluk, this Panchayat covers an area of 31.57 sq. km. People belonging to Hindu, Muslim, and Christian religions live here in religious harmony. There is a legend that during the period of incognito exile of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata, they built an Arakkillam (lac palace). The Karinelangal (black fields), which are said in legends to have been formed after that palace was burnt down, still remain in the western part of this Panchayat as a historical relic. It is said that during the time when feudalism existed, this area had a shelter for housing criminals and a gallows where punishments were executed, and hence the place got the name Kazhukambalam, which was later modified to Kizhakkambalam. The Kalariykkal Fort, where criminals were tried in chains, was located in this Panchayat. This area is known as Vilangu. The place called Murivilangu, believed to be where those acquitted were released, still exists with the same name.Large earthen pots believed to have been used in cemeteries in ancient times have been discovered from Olichiramala, Poyyakkunnamala, and Oorakkad Mala areas.Until the land reforms were implemented, most of the land in Kizhakkambalam Panchayat was in the possession of a few landlords like Kalathil Karthakkal, Swarnath Mana, Valloppilli Mana, Ulloor Devaswom, and Akavoor Mana. They leased the land to tenants and collected excessive rent. With the land reforms, the land was given to the tiller and thus landlordism came to an end.The people here have reached a very advanced stage in the field of education. There are 5 libraries functioning in this Panchayat. The Kala Fine Arts Society, which stands in the field of visual media, has made great progress. A cinema theatre is functioning in Kizhakkambalam Panchayat.
